Kanda Myojin holds its Joya-sai (New Year's Eve ceremony) on December 31, a purification ritual that closes the old year and prepares for the new. The ceremony includes susu-osame — the ritual cleaning of the shrine's soot — symbolizing the clearing away of the year's impurities.
