About This Event / イベントについて
Kanda Myojin, the historic shrine a short walk from Akihabara Electric Town, holds its Reitaisai each May. 2026 is a kagematsuri (off-year) — a quieter festival without the spectacular mikoshi procession that fills Akihabara's streets on odd-numbered years. The next full Kanda Matsuri, one of Tokyo's three great festivals, takes place in 2027.
The two-day program begins on May 14 with a formal tea ceremony (kensekishiki) by the Omotesenke school at 11:00, followed by an evening Noh performance by the Kanze school at 18:40. May 15 features the main festival ceremony at 14:00, highlighted by the Kochō-no-Mai — a graceful butterfly dance performed in elaborate Heian-era costume. The contrast between ancient ritual and the electronics district next door is uniquely Akihabara.
