About This Event / イベントについて
Each April, Yasukuni Shrine hosts a dedicated sumo event — Hono Ozumo — where wrestlers from the Japan Sumo Association, including Yokozuna and the makuuchi division, perform their formal dohyoiri (ring-entry ceremony) on the shrine grounds. The day begins with the dohyo-matsuri, a Shinto ceremony to purify the sumo ring.
The event is free to attend and draws large crowds. It's one of the few opportunities to see professional sumo wrestlers up close in central Tokyo — and just a 15-minute walk from Akihabara. Arrive early for a good viewing position around the outdoor sumo ring.

Arrive early — the outdoor ring fills up quickly and it's standing room only.
早めに到着を。立ち見のみで埋まりやすい。
The dohyo-matsuri at 9:00 is quieter but equally ceremonial.

No photography restrictions, but be respectful of the wrestlers.
