Yasukuni Shrine holds its New Year Festival on January 1, with the Shinnen-sai ceremony at midnight followed by the Futsuka-sai (Second Day Festival) on January 2. The shrine grounds are open through the night for hatsumode.
A 15-minute walk from Akihabara, Yasukuni offers a quieter hatsumode alternative to the massive crowds at Kanda Myojin. The shrine's grand torii gate and long approach are beautifully illuminated for the New Year, with food stalls and amulet sales.
